On Country Teacher Education: Developing a Success Program for and with Future Aboriginal Teachers

A growing awareness of the value Aboriginal teachers in Australian schools has motivated development ‘On Country’ Teacher Education (OCTE) program through collaboration between Western Department and Curtin University. The OCTE builds on previous initiatives to increase number classrooms also developed new features. It enables Islander Officers (AIEOs[1]) obtain a teaching degree while studying ‘on working their (often remote) schools. An evaluation first year this course interviews/yarns with AIEOs, principals, staff is outlined, highlighting support afforded by program, flexibility, face-to-face workshops. We describe how feedback provided been considered incorporated into ongoing course. [1] Formerly known as Workers (AEWs) WA government
